The Great Outdoors

Natural beauty abounds in the Rogue Valley / Southern Oregon region and few places in America present outdoor enthusiasts more excitement and variety than our beautiful area. National Parks and Monuments, wildlife and hiking – there is something for everyone to be found in our great outdoors. This is just a small sample of what awaits your arrival.

Crater Lake National Park At 1,943 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and has inspired people for thousands of years. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high; two picturesque islands; and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.

Oregon Caves National Monument Nestled deep inside the Siskiyou Mountains, the caves formed as rainwater from the ancient forest above dissolved the surrounding marble and created one of the world's few marble caves. The highly complex geology found on the Monument contributes to the unusual and rare plants and animals found nowhere else but here. Experience the extensively decorated and adventurous "Marble Halls of Oregon."

Majestic Redwood Forest Bright, open and lush, the majestic redwood groves are the most scenic in existence. There's an unusual amount of variety in the color and texture of the trees, in the size of the trees, and even in the understory vegetation, making the woods a fascinating place to hike. The park also has some trees of truly stupendous size: perhaps not quite as tall as the redwoods to the south, but bigger in diameter. Somewhere in the park is the largest coast redwood by volume, a tree that's exceeded in size, and not by much, by only seven giant sequoias.

Wildlife Images Provides care and treatment for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife indigenous to the Pacific Northwest, while giving the public an opportunity to experience wildlife first-hand. Located on 24 acres of “living laboratory” adjacent to the Wild and Scenic portion of Oregon’s Rogue River, approximately 12 miles west of Grants Pass, Wildlife Images receives and cares for over 1,000 animals every year. Tours available daily.

Upper and Lower Table Rocks Upper and Lower Table Rocks are two of the most prominent topographic features in the Rogue Valley. These flat-topped buttes rise approximately 800 feet above the north bank of the Rogue River in southwestern Oregon. Fantastic hiking with panoramic views of the Rogue Valley.

Rogue / Illinois / Applegate Rivers Southern Oregon is home to three rivers, the most famous being the Rogue River. Starting at Crater Lake and running 215 miles, all the way to the Oregon coast, the Rogue River has spectacular fishing, all manner of river activities and includes the federally protected Wild and Scenic section south of Grants Pass.

The scenic Illinois River provides opportunities for day-use as well as overnight float trips, including trips through the Kalmiopsis Wilderness during higher flows. The emerald green water of the Illinois provides a cool break from the hot summer temperatures. Primitive camping and numerous hiking trails are available along the river corridor.

The Applegate River, a major tributary of the Rogue River, drains a large portion of the eastern Siskiyou Mountains. Its generally northward course begins among the snowfields and springs along the summit of the Siskiyou Crest.

Each river offers a wide variety of activities for all manner of outdoor enthusiasts.
